Arsenal bid for Arshavin on ice

ANDREI ARSHAVIN has seen his move to Arsenal collapse on transfer deadline day.
The 27-year-old Russia playmaker was in England with the Gunners negotiating a fee with Zenit St Petersburg.

But Arsenal insiders have reportedly claimed Arshavin is now heading home after talks between the two camps broke down.

Arsenal's deal with Andrei Arshavin on the brink of collapse

The Russian striker arrived, by private jet, for talks with Arsenal officials last night, but it is understood that the Premier League club are refusing to meet the player's financial requirements.

Arsene Wenger has maintained all along that he will not break the club's wage structure. Last week he said: "The players who come in here will be a on a wages structure  or they do not come in."

It is believed that Arshavin is disappointed with Arsenal's standing with reports suggesting they have offered only half what the Russian is demanding in terms of a contract. Arshavin is said to have headed back to an airport where his private jet is waiting to take him back to St Petersburg, though the snow means that, currently, he will not be able to fly home.

The most protracted transfer during this window, has threatened to go to the wire, but the latest development suggests that Arsenal may finish the window without making any purchases.

Wenger has maintained that the signing of Arshavin is not the be all and end all to his season, though Saturday's goalless draw with West Ham, at the Emirates Stadium, suggested that, with key players missing, he needs to strengthen his squad.

Arshavin's move to Arsenal collapses over money

Sources close to Andrei Arshavin have said that the on-off transfer saga is "definitely off" and laid the blame at the door of Zenit St Petersburg and Arsenal.

"We're very disappointed. A deal has been worked on for nine months. First it was Tottenham last summer, now Arsenal," one of the sources said.

"What has been the problem with this deal? Money as always. The Russians are [unrealistic] and how can Arsenal offer less than ??15m and half of Arshavin's contract?

"He's getting €3.875m and the club is offering half. Who would take another job for half the money? Arsenal have been making big waves by saying this would be the big historic transfer in the history of the Gunners. Well, it's bull.

"They thought they could pull this off by saying we are a big club, this is a nice country, all that stuff. But he's not a 16-year-old from Africa. The life in England is more expensive – a car, a house, it's all more expensive in London, and he has to bring his family. He has one kid who is three years old, another who is one year old. It's ridiculous."

Is the deal definitely over then? "Yes, I'm afraid so." Would Arshavin go to, say, Manchester City? "No." Chelsea maybe? "No. No other clubs."
